Williamsport’s Only Bicycle Recycle Shop

Williamsport Bicycle Recycle offers access to the benefits of bicycling through hands-on programs, volunteer projects, and a neighborhood bike shop. We accept bikes and bike parts donations from the community, refurbish them, and sell them at reasonable prices. We also help people repair their bikes in our well-equipped shop.

Using bicycles for transportation and enjoyment makes Williamsport a better place to live, work, and enjoy. We work with people so that they buy the right bike and know how to repair it.

Buy a Bike

All our bikes come from donations.  Our volunteers refurbish them or strip them for usable parts. If a bike is too rusted or otherwise damaged, we take it to the recycler. We do not buy used bikes, nor do we take trade-ins or e-bikes. We aim to make the bike you buy rideable and safe.

We carry adult, young adult, and kid bikes. We can help fit you into a bike that’s comfortable.  Check out weekly specials for samples of mountain bikes, road bikes, city bikes, kids’ bikes, BMXs, and cruisers. We have many used higher-end bicycles with better frames and components compared to buying a new bicycle for that same amount of money.

Repair a Bike

Ever wish there was a place to get help on repairing your bike? In our shop, you do not drop a bike off for us to fix.

Bring your bike into our shop and for a small fee we will work with you and teach you repair techniques. You can use our tools and our recycled parts.

David and Louisa Stone,

Founders and Managers

Williamsport Bicycle Recycle began with an idea from our bike riding adventures.  We visited many non-profit community bike shops and saw their benefits: recycling, low-cost cooperative bike repair, and reasonably priced bikes for sale. In 2008 we helped the YMCA organize the Tour de Bill, a 15-mile ride through Williamsport. After each yearly ride, people approached us about low-cost bicycling. Williamsport had no recycling bike shops, so we decided to go ahead. The Y gave us some space. We began to get bike donations and equipment, sold a few bikes, gave some away, and gathered people to fix bikes.

When the Y decided to build a new building, we found space in the Pajama Factory on Park and Rose Streets. The Factory’s location was a good fit for us, near the Lycoming Creek Bike Path and in the center of a community of bike customers. The new owner was just beginning to renovate the space and the arts’ non-profit there allowed us to join. In 2014, friends helped move our bikes, parts, tools, and donated shelving, into the historic building.

Pedaling Forward:

A Decade of Community, Service, and Growth in Williamsport

Our new location proved successful, and we began actively promoting our services in Williamsport and Lycoming County. What truly distinguishes us from commercial shops is our non-profit, volunteer-based model. Our customers are not just buyers. They are active participants in the repair work on their own bikes. Our bikes may not be the most beautiful, but they are rideable, and most importantly, safe. We sell many of them for a fraction of the cost, ranging from $20 to $140.

As we continued to grow, we collaborated with other groups to sponsor bike rodeos,  kids’ events for the City Recreation, and events with other non-profit groups. Working with the YMCA, churches and other family assistance groups, we give away bikes to people in need. Four years later, we seized an opportunity to move to a larger, more visible space adjacent to the Rose Street parking lot with five large windows.  With the invaluable help of our volunteers and Penn College students, we renovated the space and made the move in December 2018.  In April 2020, we managed our business and adjusted our hours to comply with the COVID-19 requirements. Our mission remains the same: a place that offers reasonably priced refurbished bikes, with volunteers ready to assist you with repairs. In 2024, we proudly celebrated our tenth year anniversary, a testament to our growth and commitment to the community.

Donations & Volunteer Opportunities

Donate Bikes/Parts

If your old bike is usable or can be repaired, bring it to us rather than to the landfill. It’s better for the environment, for people who need transportation, for kids who outgrow a bike quickly, and for anyone who wants to get out and experience the joys of cycling.

Donate Funds

Whether large or small, your donated funds help keep us in operation. You can make a one-time donation or set up a small monthly contribution. Donations are tax deductible. Please specify the donation is for Williamsport Bicycle Recycle.

Volunteer

We are always looking for volunteers of different backgrounds – skilled mechanics for bike repair and refurbishment, those willing to learn, general shop work such as cleaning or organizing, marketing and social media management, and management.

Get Involved

We’re working towards a Bike-Friendly Williamsport Not all cities, including Williamsport, are lucky enough to have bike-friendly streets. That doesn’t mean it should stay that way. Bike Advocacy works toward making our city streets bike-friendly both now and in the future by getting bike-friendly streets integrated into city planning.
